the good, the bad, & the ugly of sports

Badminton

A small stuff made of feathers and a cork, and the wires fixed in a metal or wooden frame, are what the game of Badminton consists of for its articles. There is a marked area, a net and you are done: ready to play Badminton, with all its deceptive delicacy and sheer presence of mind. It does not involve long running from one end of the ground to another, but leaves you tired enough for the running is shorter enough but still much.

It is very exciting game and involves a lot of mind: yes, you can win the game of Badminton, if you know and can place the shuttlecock at the right place—where the opponent player would be unable to return it to you.

It is very exhilarating game and gives much pleasure to the viewers and the players love it very much. And in old times, people played it just for keeping their fitness intact and healthy. It is more popular in Asia and Indonesia, Malaysia, China, India are leading countries that have given good players. In recent times it has grown in Europe also and Denmark has produced world-leading players. And it is surprising that in a short period, they have gained almost monopoly over the game.

And more surprisingly is the tournament, which is most coveted and has got the toughest competition--The All England Open! Yes, the most interesting tournament is from a European country. Very recently other European countries have also started such tournaments and German Open is one of them. But the cynosure of Badminton is Olympics.

In India, Prakash Padukone, won the All England Badminton competition almost around 25 years ago. He started an academy and produced another All England champion from it, Pullela Gopichand, who won it after 20 years. In the woman sector, India has never produced a world-leading player and is still struggling to find one.
