Rain and Golf -A real Opportunity
0 Comments Published by Eric Drouant on Friday, April 08, 2005 at 5:10 PM.It seems like mother nature has taken an aversion to golf lately with a whole slew of tournaments being postponed and shortened due to rain. Whether this is because God doesn't want any golf being played while the Pope is sick and then being buried I won't venture to guess, but in my mind I think the big guy is sending a message to the golfing community that he wants to see some changes made.
Consider this: Maybe golf should be played regardless of weather conditions. Who says that you have to have perfect weather in a sporting contest? Football is played pretty much no matter what the weather is like. The entertainment value of a golf game being played in bad weather could be tremendous. Eliminate the whole wimpy, gotta have sunshine deal, and send the millionaires out in a hailstorm. Let's see Tiger Woods and company out there swinging the clubs decked out in their all weather gear. Talk about a challenge! It could open up the game to legions of idiots without enough sense to come in out of the rain, me among them.
While you wouldn't catch me wasting time watching golf played in fair weather, I might spend some time glued in front of the tube if they were playing in a lightning storm, or a hurricane or heck, even in a tornado watch. The more I think about it, the more this idea seems to put some real grit into the game of golf.
Here are a few more ideas.
Load the course with alligators like they do in Florida except these alligators are really hungry. I'd like to here a commentator say "Well Tom," turning to his co-commentator, "How you think the fact that Singh just had his left leg chewed off will affect his swing?"
Snakes would be good too. "That's the third time today that Tiger's been bitten by a water moccasin. It must be tough to grip the club with his hand swelled up like a watermelon and staggering around like he's been doing. But what a competitor! The guy just keeps on going."
Here's another good idea. Exchange the sand traps for real quicksand. "It's must be tough on Els caddie to pick a club with him up to his chin in the quicksand, I tell you good caddies are getting harder and harder to find."
I believe golf could only be improved with the introduction of more adverse conditions. After all, it's worked for reality TV.
