When taking up the sport of archery, there's archery equipment that's needed and some that is wanted. Arrows and targets are in the definite needs category. Arrows come in different shapes with various tips and are assembled from materials such as aluminium, wood, or carbon. Arrows can cost anywhere from fifty cents to $50.00 per arrow. If you are a beginner, the less expensive are better because it won't matter if you loose one. The tips of arrows are almost as different as arrows themselves. While they used to be made from stone or bone, technology has changed the way they are made. They are made from carbonated steel and come in different shapes and sizes.
However, if you are innovative, you can make your own arrows. The shafts of the arrows can be made with thin dowel which is purchased at crafts or hobbies stores. The fletching is made from turkey feathers or strips of thin plastic bought from an archery store or mail order source. The purchased tapers (or arrowheads) can be hot glued into a slot that has been made in the shaft. This may take some practise and research, but in the long run, it could be a cheaper way of getting arrows.
Targets that are purchased can be anything from 3D (which can be an animal such as a deer, bear or racoon), square shaped block targets or rectangular bag targets which are covered with material and filled with foam. You can make your own targets by collecting old rugs and foam padding. You need to then sandwich the foam and rugs together, bind them and viola, you have a target, mount it to a fence or a post and you are ready to start practicing.
If you already have basic archery equipment like a bow, are handy and can find a distributor to buy the supplies needed, you can make some of your own equipment. This will not only make you proud in your expertise as you gain experience in the sport, but also the pride in a diy job well done.
