Mountain biking is now one of the most popular activities in the United States. People of all ages can ride mountain bikes; children use mountain bikes for learning how to ride and to ride carefree around parks and neighborhoods; teens use mountain bikes for visiting friends, transportation, and adventures; families use mountain bikes for vacation excursions and adventure trips; and of course there are the hearty types who use their mountain bikes to trek up mountains, across deserts, and through thick woods. Mountain biking is basically hiking on wheels. It can be done virtually anywhere, on any terrain, depending on strength and skill level. Following are several reasons to begin mountain biking.
1. Transportation. Most of us grew up riding the old, regular Schwin bikes with banana seats and tall handle-bars. Today many children are riding mountain bikes. Since mountain bikes can be ridden on sidewalks or roads as well as trails, they are perfect for children. Mountain bikes can be ridden down the street to a friend's home, and then through the meadow to the pond, back through the park for a game of Frisbee, and then back home again, along the sidewalk. Unlike road bikes, mountain bikes can be bumped along over a gravel road or even splashed through the mud. The wide, rugged tires make it suitable for any terrain.
2. Camaraderie. Mountain biking is best done in groups - not so much for the safety factors, though it is always better to have a buddy when doing any sport or physical activity, but more because it is so much more fun. Many people head off on trails or down lone roads by themselves, but with a friend or family member, the ride can be much more enjoyable. Most people know how to ride a bike and few will turn down at least a short ride around the block or down an easy woodland path. Families can ride together and friends will find they can chat as they go. Seeing the scenery and breathing fresh air only adds to the camaraderie.
3. Vacationing. Lightweight bike racks have become more popular than ever as vacationers are now bringing their mountain bikes with them when they travel. Mountain bikes can be brought on campouts, to be used for transportation around a lake or to the general camp store, or they can be brought to new cities, used to navigate the area rather than worrying about traffic or parking.
4. Health benefits. Mountain biking is an indispensable mode of fitness. Encourage children to learn how to ride a bike at a young age and join them as they ride, to show them the importance of fitness and the fun involved. Biking builds muscle strength and encourages good cardiovascular health. The fresh air and sunshine are an added bonus. And remember, always wear a helmet and any other protective gear, and make sure your mountain bike is fitted with any necessary reflectors or lights for city riding. Be safe and have fun - your body will thank you!
