Road biking is one of the fastest sports that can double as a mode of transportation. Road biking isn't just racing or going on local rides; many road bikers around the country are adding lightweight trailers to their bikes, filling them with basic belongings and setting out to see the land. Coast to coast rides are more popular than ever. For those who aren't quite as adventuresome, local biking clubs and organizations have weekly road biking rides for riders of all speeds, distances and skill levels. If a biker decides he wants to try his hand at bike racing, the clubs will point him toward a race. Road bikers are also finding they can support a cause through their riding, and the health benefits are numerous. Following are only a few of the many reasons to begin road biking.
1. Transportation. Road bikes are built to be streamlined and speedy. Steady speeds of 20-25 miles per hour are not uncommon in experienced road bikers. In the warmer months, when the weather is cooperative, road bikers find they can often get to their destination more quickly on a bicycle. Many times bikes can by-pass heavy summer traffic and there is no better way to get fresh air and sunshine.
2. Camaraderie. Road biking clubs, like any club, are filled with people who have a passion for clipping their biking shoes into the pedals and shooting off down the road to a known or unknown destination. Biking clubs allow members to meet new friends, encourage beginners, and learn from seasons bikers. There can be great joy in following a lead biker around town or through the countryside, simply enjoying the ride and the group, without worrying about where to go.
3. See the country. Many people have the itch to set out and drive across the country, going the back roads and learning the ins and outs of our great nation. Road bikers get an even more up-close and personal view of our great nation. Many road biking clubs have sister clubs along the way so bikers can hook up with like-minded people and find places to stay. Bikers will see sights and areas that will be missed by motorists zooming by.
4. Support a cause. Each year, all around the country, there are road biking rides that are specifically designed to support a worthy cause. Riders gather sponsors and then ride either a large set of miles in one day or hundreds of miles in a few days. Whether you want to benefit medical research, homelessness, literacy, or some other way of helping people, there is probably a road biking organization for you.
5. Health benefits. Most people don't begin road biking just for fitness, but it is a wonderful way of keeping in shape. Road biking builds muscles and strengthens the cardiovascular system. The consistent movement and fresh air is much better than sitting in a stagnant car.
Always remember to wear a helmet, protective gear, and have the proper reflectors and lighting apparatus on your road bike.
