Beginner's Guide to Motocross Gear

Everyone can get involved, from kids as young as three or four years old to moms, dads, and grandparents. However, this is a sport that you can't just decide that you want to take up, then go to the local track and participate. You need to have lots of equipment before you start. And of course you'll need to have a motocross bike, too! Here's a quick rundown of the basic safety equipment that you should purchase before you start riding.
Helmet
It almost goes without saying that you should never, ever get on a motocross bike without a helmet. Your helmet is the most important piece of safety equipment that you will purchase, so make sure you spend some time trying on different models from different manufacturers in order to find one that fits properly. The helmet should be very snug, and should feel comfortable on your head without putting too much strain on your neck. It should also be DOT and/or SNELL certified, which means that it complies with certain safety standards.
Boots
Boots are another important part of any motocross rider's equipment. Most motocross boots are made from a combination of leather and hard plastic. This protects your ankles, toes, and shins from rocks or bike parts in the event that you take a spill. Since good motocross boots can cost several hundred dollars, many beginners are tempted to wear hiking boots, work boots, or some other kind of footwear when they ride. That's really a bad idea. You shouldn't mess around with safety. If you do want to save money on boots, try buying a gently used pair or try buying them from eBay.
Jersey, Pants, and Gloves
These items are grouped together because most motocross riders tend to match the color schemes of their jerseys, pants, and gloves. In addition, many stores offer package deals where you can get all three of these for a bit cheaper than it would be to buy them separately. For those of you looking to cut corners, you can do it with your gear and hardly notice a difference. First, you can buy older models. Just like with regular clothes, motocross jerseys and pants go through design changes year after year. The colors, patterns, and designs change, not the function. So if you don't mind wearing 2004 or 2005 jerseys in 2006, then you can find some really great deals. Jerseys from the year 2004 that ordinarily cost $50 or more can be had for $20 or less if you buy them after the 2005 models come out. The same thing applies to pants and gloves.
Goggles
You will also need a pair of goggles to protect your eyes from flying debris such as sand, dirt, pebbles, and even larger rocks. Goggles are another must-have piece of motocross equipment. Don't try to ride without them!
Once you have all these things, then you'll be ready to enjoy one of the best sports around. So go out there, have fun, and ride safely!
