Owens Takes the Field as a Cowboy
Monday, September 04, 2006

Cowboy fans: What was that?? Last Thursday evening during a PRESEASON game against the Minnesota Vikings, the Dallas Cowboys had a "dress rehearsal" prep game for the regular season. What I saw was the game's best receiver get praised by a crowd of roughly 25-30,000 Cowboy fans as if he just scored the game winning touchdown. Terrell Owens is a very sensational player, a game changer if you will, and fans cheered him as if he was one of the triplets (Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith and Michael Irvin). My anger in that is this: the guy hasn't done ANYTHING for this team yet. How can a fan cheer and praise a guy that hasn't done anything except miss practices and preseason games? The only thing fans can use is that he is a good player whom has wreaked havoc as an opponent on Cowboy teams in the past. Maybe fans are figuring that since he's on this team, he can do the same against other teams as he used to do this one. For Cowboy's fans' sake, I surely hope that they get the Terrell Owens who catches a 4-yard pass and turns it into a 96-yard touchdown scamper, instead of "the player" that does sit-ups in his own driveway joined by a host of media personalities.

Many members of the media mock this guy's hamstring injury as fictitious. They say that Owens pretty much faked this injury the entire duration of training camp to mark his territory on the team, sort of like a dog marking putting his mark on a fire hydrant in the neighborhood. They accuse him of wanting to run the team and do his own thing like working out alone and not practicing with the team. Prior to signing with the Cowboys, the Philadelphia media actually predicted that Owens would not change and that he would treat the Cowboys franchise just like he did the Eagles. They also predicted that Owens would become mysteriously injured and pretty much miss the bulk of training camp. Training camp has now come and gone and yes, Owens did suffer from an injury. Question of the day: Did Owens really hurt that hamstring? And if so, why did he decide to all of sudden play in the Cowboys last preseason game against the Vikings? Additionally, his agent Drew Rosenhaus went on the record to say that Owens had a serious injury BEFORE the Vikings preseason game. Rosenhaus, called the hamstring injury a "pull", which is more serious than a strain. Let me remind you that Rosenhaus is no doctor by the way. My thing is this, Owens had a pulled or strained hammy that became a healed hammy in a span of 3 or 4 days. Can you say miracle?

All was well with fans when he stepped on the field for first time as a Dallas Cowboy. During the Cowboys' third drive, Owens and Coach Parcells had a brief conversation before Owens trotted out on the field to join his teammates. As suspected T.O. ran ragged routes and was mistimed with quarterback Drew Bledsoe on a couple of plays. I will say this however, that "hamstring" didn't seem to bother him as much. Owens did look tired on occasions as well, but that's expected when you don't practice enough. He finally broke himself in as a Cowboy receiver by reeling in a 6-yard out pass from backup QB Tony Romo. T.O. and Romo also attempted to connect when Romo overthrew Owens in the back of the end zone later in the same drive. The timing between quarterbacks and received will improve with repetition. One would say that is where practicing comes into play.

Overall, Owens is now a Dallas Cowboy and fans have received him with very open arms. I was on hand to hear the warm reception from the crowd and couldn't believe what I was hearing. I'll wait until September 10th when they go on the road to face the Jacksonville Jaguars before I lose my voice due to yelling in support of this guy. I AM a fan of good players, but at the same time I want to see good character as well. When Owens generally speaks to the media, he seems sincere. I just hope that he doesn't transform the 2006 Cowboys to the 2005 Eagles.
