Week 9: Extra Points...and Opinions
Monday, November 06, 2006

By Tovash Hatcher

The NFL 2006 season is halfway done. Besides the Indianapolis Colts, tell me a clear cut team that totally puts fear into your heart. The Patriots turned the ball over at home 5 times and lose, the undefeated Bears lose to a horrible Dolphins team, and the Super Bowl champs have disappeared off the face of the earth.

Let me get my anger out of the way before I blow up. Mr. Owens, what the hell was that? A potential game-clinching touchdown catch late in the third quarter squirts from the grasps of your hands to the ground and causes your team to lose. Consequently for me, I'm a fan of the team that you caused to lose yesterday's game against the Redskins. If you would have held onto the ball, the Cowboys go up 14 points, and you would have come back home back to Dallas with a win and had the media calling you a great player in this league. After the Panthers game a week ago you told the media that "big time players make big time plays". So are you a big time player or is the rest of the league right when they call you "the most overrated player in football"? You do all the celebrating after 7-yard touchdown catches, but when the team needs a big play you literally let it slip away.

I woke up this morning still scratching my head wondering how the Cowboys always seem to find their way to the losing end of a game when they have the game pretty much secured. I don't understand how a team can allow a field goal to be blocked when they rehearse the same play for at least a thousand times per season. Lastly, I don't understand how a "Pro Bowl" type safety continues to get beat by opposing wide receivers game in and game out. And I forgot to mention that the same safety, Roy Williams, committed a costly pass interference penalty and also dropped an interception that could have helped his team a great deal. The Redskins did a darn good job of playing the role of orphan children who had a fortune fall into their laps as the Cowboys gave them a victory. If you watched the game on Fox, you would have noticed that the Cowboys had the game won on many different plays. Nonetheless, Nick Novak of all people nails a 48-yard field goal with no time on the clock to give the Redskins a 22-19 victory. My apologies to the lone bright spot on this Cowboys team which is QB Tony Romo. I failed to mention yet another stellar game for the 26-year-old behind center.

Stats are just numbers that show up after a game has already been played. More often, stats show how a player or a team is doing compared to the rest of the league. Here's a stat for you...8-0. That's the Colts record after they beat the Patriots at home in Foxboro. Peyton "Mr. Commercial" Manning is the best player in the National Football League. Agree? If not, many of you Patriots fans will still back your QB Tom Brady even after a 4 interception day, and others will say Ladainian Tomlinson of San Diego. By being the leader of the Colts offense, Manning has declared to the rest of the league that this is his year. People say this and that about him, but all he does is win. Last year, Manning was a 40-yard kick away from getting the Colts to the Super Bowl. Since the kick was missed, critics came out of the woodworks to say that Manning can't win the big one. People please!! Manning will get there this year and then what? He leads an offense where the running game is missing. And who is this Joseph Addai guy? He is in the backfield for the Colts this year where Edgerrin James used to be. James, who is now in Arizona took the money and left Indy. Bad move. Addai who is no Edgerrin James is carrying the load for the Colts' ground game and is doing a pretty good job. He had 43 yards on 18 carries with one touchdown run. Manning is putting up another MVP type season and this time, he is doing it almost single-handedly. The Colts lack a decent running game and the defense isn't that great but Manning is, and the Colts are fortunate to have him. The Colts had 5 takeaways and also took the game from the Patriots by the score of 27-20.

The New York Giants struggled at home against the Houston Texans, the Vikings go to San Francisco and lose, and the streaking Falcons are pummeled by the Detroit Loins?? This is today's NFL and until we get to Week 16, we don't know exactly what can happen on a week to week basis.
